Insults against LGBTTQ+ persons create a climate where discrimination against students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, etc… (LGBTTQ+) is allowed and where difference of any kind is not respected.

Often, students themselves are not aware of how insulting and hurtful their words can be until this is discussed.

Awareness of insulting language is vital to ensuring a non-discriminatory, non-judgmental, safe space for all youth.

Words can be used to insult, empower, create fear, or to accept students who are LGBTTQ+.

by Stephanie Mitelman, M.A., CSE, AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator

This activity kit will help students be more aware of the impact of their language on gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, etc… (LGBTTQ+) students, and in which context certain words and phrases are acceptable or not.

Students will be asked to identify what statements are insults or are okay to say.

Hearing various perspectives on these statements through this activity will draw out important discussions on how words used in various situations can impact an individual student and create at your school a culture of acceptance versus  a culture of fear.
