Would your students know the how to handle these statements and questions?
- BE A MAN! MAN UP!
- WHAT WOULD YOU DO? WEAR A MASK OR BE THE MAN YOU ARE?
Masculinity is often warped, stigmatized, and used as a social mask to hide qualities such as emotionality and insecurity.
The Mask We Wear Activity Kit
by Stephanie Mitelman, M.A., CSE, AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator
This activity seeks to allow male youth to identify their own problematic conceptions of masculinity.
Although power differentials among prison staff and prisoners exist, discussion within these activities will be egalitarian, meaning that the facilitator contributes equally, and that each member of the group is given an
equal opportunity to express and elaborate upon their opinions.
The following activities promote self-reflection about what it means to be a man, as well as understanding toxic masculinity and hyper-masculinity.
These activities work to challenge the group’s conception of masculinity, as well to cast doubt upon the harmful stereotypes hyper-masculinity perpetuates.
Contents Include:
- 2 EACH MAN/MASK CARDS
- 20 QUESTION/SCENARIO LIST FOR INSTRUCTOR
