Would your students know how to answer these questions about the differences between a friend and someone being friendly?

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FRIEND, AND SOMEONE WHO IS BEING FRIENDLY?
  • HOW DO FRIENDS ACT?
  • HOW DO FRIENDLY PEOPLE ACT?
  • IS SOMEONE MY FRIEND, OR ARE THEY JUST DOING THEIR JOB?

Distinguishing between someone being your “friend” and someone being “friendly” can be difficult.

Friend Versus Friendly The Game (Download)

Navigating Friendships and Acquaintances

by Stephanie Mitelman, M.A., CSE, AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator

This game seeks to illuminate the differences between actions your “friends” would do, and actions that “friendly” strangers or acquaintances may do.

Contents Include:

  • INSTRUCTIONS
  • 2 “Friend” CARDS
  • 2 “Friendly” CARDS
  • SET OF 24 INSTRUCTOR SCENARIO CARDS WITH IMAGES + DESCRIPTIONS
    • These scenarios might include:
      • The bus driver smiles at you when you get on the bus (FRIENDLY)
      • Your classmate invites you to come to their house for dinner (FRIEND)

This game was designed to teach students with social impairments, particularly those with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, or other special needs, to examine scenarios with friends, strangers, and acquaintances closely. This game will help children distinguish when someone might just be doing their job, versus when someone is showing signs of friendship.

DURATION: The game is 30 minutes + a discussion.

SUGGESTED GRADE LEVEL:  Elementary and individuals with special needs

P.S. This is the E-version of the program. It contains the same contents as the Print version of the same program.

P.S.S. If you would like to also purchase the Print version of the same program please go to Friend Versus Friendly: The Game Activity Kit
